The Loop1 SolarWinds Orion 201 Advanced Training 4-day class takes an in-depth look at NPM, NCM, SAM, DPA, WPM, VMAN, SRM, Custom SQL Alerts and Reports
Attendance on the Loop1 Orion 101 class is not a pre-requisite, but this class will not cover installation or provide a basic overview of NPM, SAM, NCM and the Orion Platform.
Students would highly benefit from a basic understanding of the Transact SQL and PowerShell languages, but prior knowledge is not required.
Day 1 Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
- Primary Polling Engine
- Additional Polling Engines
- Additional Web Engines

- Creation of Universal Device Pollers
- Creation of Custom Device Studio Pollers
Students will perform NPM discovery in the context of application monitoring and mapping. They will get hands-on experience running network discovery scans.
Day 2 Network Configuration Manager (NCM) & Server and Application Monitoring (SAM)
- Creating Customized Device Templates
- Creating Customized Configuration Change Templates
- Working with and Understanding Compliance
- Overview of Change Approval Process
- Additional Polling Engines and Web Engines

- Create Custom PowerShell Script Monitors
Students will see how to manipulate monitored objects directly in the Orion database while gaining an in-depth understanding of how to map all components of an application within an application delivery environment. Students will gain an understanding of how to monitor availability and performance, including identifying and setting thresholds for application performance.
Day 3 Database Performance Analyzer (DPA), Website Performance Monitor (WPM), Virtualization Manager (VMAN), Storage Resource Monitor (SRM), AppStack View, and Application Maps

Students will learn the differences between AppInsight and custom template monitors, and deploy both AppInsight for SQL and DPA.

Meet the Instructor
As a founding member of Loop1 and current Chairman and CEO, Bill has recently stepped back into the classroom to lead the SolarWinds training practice he established some ten years ago at Loop1. A natural instructor and self-proclaimed geek at heart, Bill has a passion for helping others with technology, and in particular, for translating technical concepts into plain English. He started his career as a network engineer and has been working with SolarWinds tools since 2000. He currently holds 5 SolarWinds Certified Professional (SCP) certifications (NPM, NCM, NTA, SAM, and A&D).
Marcus Jacomb is a Field Systems Engineer at Loop1 in Cork, Ireland—providing remote and onsite support consultancy across all SolarWinds IT network management and monitoring tools. He has a vast amount of experience in working with clients of varying sizes and across a range of industry sectors, assisting with their SolarWinds deployments. This includes installation services, configuration, consulting, troubleshooting, system design, support, and training provision.
Marcus is an enthusiastic, outgoing, self-driven and professional individual who thrives on new, exciting challenges and hard work. He has achieved all available SolarWinds certifications and plans to continue to learn and certify as new exams become available.
Darryl has spent the whole of his working career focused on the Management and Monitoring of IT Systems and networks, often within secured environments. He has been working with SolarWinds software for more than 20 years, and currently holds all 8 available SCP’s, as well as being a SolarWinds Channel Champion.
Darryl has a background in training and development, with a post-graduate award from Cambridge University and a Fellowship from the Learning & Performance Institute. He has an evangelists zeal for implementing consistent, accurate and effective system monitoring following ITIL guidelines.
A typical week for Darryl consists of 50% end-user training and 50% consultancy provision for clients of all sizes and across all industry sectors. Darryl is a frequent participant and invited speaker at trade shows and conferences.
